With gardening trowels at the ready, members of the 5th Deal Scout Group have met with residents of Caesar Court to cultivate their plans to enter this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.
Caesar Court is one of our flagship independent living schemes and customers there actively seek opportunities to become involved with local community.
Last weekend (1 March) the scouts worked with Caesar Court’s keen gardeners Steve Baker and Tony Hennebury in the residents' gardens on Mongeham Road in Ripple, Deal.
Group scout leader Mavis Marsh explained that the gardening initiative would count towards the scouts’ community badges. “This is an exciting project that will also include members from the area’s beavers, cubs and explorer groups,” said Mavis. “We are learning about which flowers to plant and the young people will be constructing bat and bird boxes to introduce into the garden.”
Britain in Bloom is the largest horticultural campaign in the UK. It is a national competition that is staged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and attracts more than 1,600 entries each year.
The gardening event is entered into by communities living in towns, villages and cities. Different categories exist for various sizes of settlements and the judges assess horticultural excellence; environmental responsibility and community participation. Orbit is a regular contributor to the competition and has previously accrued 18 winning submissions from different Orbit residences, including an entry from Caesar Court.
Following the regional competitions, around 80 communities are selected to enter the national finals of Britain in Bloom.
Caesar Court comprises 81 one and two bedroom apartments, which were made available through a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership. The flagship Orbit housing development has become a real hub for the local community, with a number of its facilities being open to the public, including a hairdressers, café and restaurant.
