Looking back
What first brought you to Orbit, and what made you stay?
I applied for a care job at St Augustine’s but was unsuccessful because I didn’t have the correct qualifications. My CV was passed to the Estates Manager at the time, and I was invited to have a look round Gunton to replace another caretaker who was about to retire. The community has been great and has made my time here memorable and more than just a job.
What’s one project or moment you’re most proud of during your time here?
I won the Best Kept Scheme award in the 1990’s!
Supporting customers
What’s something you wish people knew about the work you’ve done behind the scenes?
Over the years, I’ve become part of the community. I regularly help residents with tasks outside of the working day like changing tyres, helping them move large items and picking up tasks at the weekend to make sure the site is well maintained.
What’s one moment where you felt you made a real difference to a customer’s experience?
Everyday was an opportunity to make a difference to our customers. Whether it was helping with tasks they struggled to do themselves, making sure the play area was safe for the children, or making sure the estate was clean, tidy and well maintained.
Orbit then & now
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen across the organisation or the sector?
The size of Orbit, the number of homes and employees, and the way sites are managed has changed a lot over the last 30 years. When I first started, the only technology I had was a pager which my manager would contact me on. Now I have a mini computer in my pocket which lets me keep in touch with my colleagues, training, email, The Ozone and much more!
Looking forward
What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
Getting a free bus pass! I’m looking forward to travelling around my new local area up north and exploring different places for free.
Do you have any plans, hobbies or adventures lined up?
I’ll be busy doing up the home I’ve bought on the North Coast. I’m looking forward to a cruise around the Baltics in the summer and will continue my work with the church.
Is there anything you’re excited to try with your new free time?
I’d love to pick up scuba diving again and try skiing!
Any message you’d like to leave for the team?
“I’m coming home, I’ve done my time” – part of a quote from the song Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.
Good luck to everyone!
A big thank you, Frank, for everything you’ve done over the years. Your hard work, kindness and commitment have made a big impact and has meant so much to us all. We wish you all the very best for a happy and well-earned retirement.
