When Carl’s circumstances changed unexpectedly, his benefits were affected, and he began struggling with essential bills like rent and Council Tax. He reached out because he needed someone to help make sense of it all and support him to find a way forward that felt manageable.
With Carl’s permission, we worked closely with his mum to make things feel less stressful and to support Carl in a way that felt comfortable for him. Our financial inclusion team took time to listen and understand his circumstances.
The team spotted an error in Carl’s housing payment and helped get it corrected with Universal Credit, which increased the money he receives each month.
Step by step, things started to improve:
- Some of Carl’s rent arrears were removed after a successful appeal to Universal Credit
- A request was made to write off his Council Tax arrears due to financial hardship
- Discretionary Housing Payments helped ease the impact of the bedroom tax
- His income increased after support with an application for Limited Capability for Work
These changes brought much-needed stability, but just as importantly, Carl finally felt heard.
“I felt I was valued, and this is something I have not felt for a while.”
Today, Carl feels more secure, less stressed and better supported to move forward. His story shows that when support is shaped around the person then real change is possible.
