In non-emergency situations, call 101 to make an enquiry or report information to the police. You’ll also find details of your neighbourhood policing team on Police.uk

 

Doorstep safety

  • Keep your front and back doors locked and do not leave keys in view.
  • Use the door viewer or nearby window when answering the door.
  • If a door chain or bar is fitted, then use it and keep it on when talking to callers at the door.
  • Never let people persuade you to let them into your home and don’t feel embarrassed - genuine callers expect you to be careful.
  • Only let callers in if they have a pre-booked appointment.
  • Always ask for identification and check this in detail – phone the company to check their identity if unsure.
  • Never agree to pay for goods or give money to strangers who arrive at your door.
  • Avoid keeping too much money in your home.
  • If you’re not sure, don’t answer the door.

Home safety

  • Always lock all your doors and windows when you leave your home.
  • Never leave keys under mats or hanging on a string behind the letterbox. Do not leave keys in view.
  • Always check the identity of callers before you let them in. All our staff and contractors carry photographic identification, but if you are unsure, contact us and we’ll be happy to confirm if they’re a staff member or contractor acting on our behalf.
  • If you are away for a few days or more, cancel milk and newspaper deliveries.
  • If you live in a block of flats with a door entry phone, never prop open the main door.

You may also find there is a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area. You can search for local schemes, or find out how to start one, via the Neighbourhood Watch Network.

Our employees and contractors will contact you to confirm they’re going to visit, either before, or on the day of the appointment.

Our employees and contractors carry proof of identification. Always ask to see this before letting someone into your home.
